Telephone Occupational Health Assessments
The Occupational Health Telephone Consultation is an extremely useful alternative to face-to-face assessments. Many health specialties already use them to great effect and we have been developing its use in Occupational Health. The reason is that most consultations in OH do not rely heavily on the examination, more on the history and very detailed questioning.
Also, the high proportion of stress cases in the clinical mix lends itself well to telephone assessment and support.
The benefits are;
- Quicker appointments-often 1-2 days rather than 1-2 weeks. Good if HR managers require a good report about their employee quickly eg
- employee returning to work shortly after illness or operation. You need to know the risks and any adjustments which may be needed to make sure they are safe at work.
- longer term absence cases with whom you have a review meeting shortly.
- Distance no object- e.g. if employee lives a long way from the assessment centre. We often conduct health reviews by phone and email with clients.
- Employee too ill or disabled to come to clinic? Arrange telephone assessment.
- Around 80% of cases could be dealt with by phone if need be. Even for the other 20%, it can be a very cost-effective useful first assessment in cases which do later require physical examination.
- Rapid follow-up for pre-employment questionnaire assessments.
- Cheaper than home visits as travel avoided.
- Often easy to do Same Day assessments.
- Less CO2 emissions!
Occupational Health
Whereas the occasional sick day is largely unavoidable, long-term or higher than normal levels of short-term absence pose a much greater cost threat. And for that, Enlighten offers a range of services that can dramatically reduce the level of sickness, absence and the associated cost. As a result, our assistance could also help increase the productivity of your workforce.
Preventative Measures
To prevent sickness and absence, we provide:
Pre-placement health assessments to determine that recruitment candidates are suitable for the role they are applying for and that their health will not be adversely affected by it.
Assessments to monitor the health of employees, through which we deliver practical advice to address any identified areas of concern.
A range of education services that can greatly increase employee health and wellbeing awareness. These can be delivered using printed/online literature, training or a range of innovative and memorable delivery methods such as tailored health awareness programmes.
Helping Employees Back to Work
Our aim with longer-term absence is to facilitate a return to work for the employee as quickly as possible. Even if initially only in a limited capacity, this can begin to alleviate the cost of absence for the employer as well as rebuild the confidence of the employee. After gathering initial information about the situation – usually by way of a simple referral questionnaire – the employee will meet with one of our specialist consultants. Together, they will explore options and, particularly in the case of employees who exhibit higher than normal levels of short-term absence, identify potential root causes. The consultant will then prepare a concise report and help to determine an appropriate course of action that serves the best interests of employer and employee.
