Management Ill Health Referral

A management ill health referral is an independent medical assessment. We provide human resources and line managers with a diagnosis and prognosis of an employee’s medical and emotional wellbeing so that you are equipped to make a business decision. The occupational reporting can be for a range of health reasons such as:

  • Long-term absence
  • Is the employee's medical condtion genuine
  • Returning to work after agreed long-term absence [e.g. operation]
  • Repeatedly absent for short periods
  • Underperforming at work and an underlying medical condition may be suspected
  • Recovering from an injury/accident
  • Job role or disability discrimination act requirements

The employee in question is referred for an assessment with an Occupational Health Physician. A report will be issued to the manager who made the referral.
[Please note the process does not involve any treatment]

Management Referral Reports

The report will provide independent advice covering diagnosis, prognosis and recommendations relevant to the employee’s ‘fitness for work’, focusing on areas such as:

  • Ability to carry out required duties
  • Possible restrictions on employment due to medical problems
  • Expected return to work date
  • Appropriate capability and attendance targets
  • Implications for the Disability Discrimination Act and adjustments advised
